  • All devices that use the Internet must have an Internet protocol, or IP, address to connect. It is a series of numbers separated by periods. Because of the explosion in Internet users, static or permanent IP addresses are used by servers. Static IP addresses must be programmed manually. Non-servers are assigned dynamic IP addresses from a pool of addresses by their Internet service provider. Servers use programs such as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to designate temporary addresses electronically each time a user logs on.

    On Your Computer

Connect to the Internet to find your IP address. For Windows, go to the Start menu and select All Programs. Click on Accessories and then Command Prompt. Enter ipconfig and hit enter. Your IP (or IPv4 in Vista or 7) address will be a series of numbers separated by periods. For wired connections, find it under Local Area Connection; for wifi, check Wireless Network Connection. When using PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol ) with a modem at home, your address will be different every time you log on. On a Mac OS or OS X, select System Preferences from the Apple menu. Go to the View menu and select Network. In the Network Preference menu, click a port such as Ethernet or AirPort. Find your IP address under Status. For OS X 10.4 or 10.3, select Location from the Apple menu and go to Network Preferences. In that window next to Show, select Network Status. Your IP address will be displayed if you are connected to the Internet.

    On the Web

According to the University of Indiana, websites such as ShowIPAddress.com will display your IP address, location and other information. Many sites are free. Because IP addresses are used by region-based ISPs, their addresses will indicate the region or country where the computer connected to the Net. If you know an IP address, you can learn its geographic details (country, region or state, city, latitude, longitude and phone area code). The details come from a geolocation database which can pinpoint the general location on a map. The location is 90 percent accurate in the United States for individual states. Globally, it is 60 percent accurate. Geolocation technology is not 100 percent correct in indicating IP addresses, nor will it give an exact address.
