XLS and XLT denote different styles of the same model of automobile. The basic difference between Ford XLS and XLT styles is that the XLT is a higher-priced version of the basic XLS model with several different features not found in the XLS. For comparison, one can look at the 2010 Ford Escape.
Interior
The XLS model has a cloth-trimmed interior, but the XLT model uses a premium cloth on the interior trim. The steering wheel on the XLT is covered with leather, while the XLS comes standard with a urethane-covered steering wheel.
Exterior
The XLT comes standard with fog lamps and an auto lamp feature. Optional features that are not available on the XLS include heated side mirrors and a power-controlled moon roof.
Power and Handling
The XLS comes standard with a five-speed manual transmission, while the XLT comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. Also, the XLT comes with optional upgrades from 16-inch wheels to 17-inch wheels.
Safety
While most of the safety features are the same on the XLS and XLT models, the XLT comes with a keyless entry system that is not available on the XLS.
Cost
The starting manufacturer's suggested retail price for a Ford Escape 2010 XLS is $20,550. The XLT has a starting cost of $23,575.
