Even a single colon cleansing is, at best, unnecessary for most people. Also known as colonic hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation, the procedure can even be harmful. Proponents cite the health advantages of flushing out "bad" bacteria from the gastrointestinal tract. But Dr. David Heber, director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition, notes that the process doesn't distinguish between "bad" and "good" bacteria," and that "...bacteria can be your friend" in the digestive process. Besides, there's a potential risk of bacterial infection and of disrupting the balance of electrolytes. When that happens, dehydration and low blood pressure can result.

On the Other: There Might Be Limited Benefits for Some

There are limited situations in which the occasional colon cleansing might be beneficial. It could serve as a treatment for those with irritable bowel syndrome. And some believe that the digestive tracts of Americans are more vulnerable to a substance found in preserved meat that's carcinogenic in animals. This substance sits in the digestive tract longer than it does for people in countries with high-fiber diets. A colon cleansing would speed up the transit time of an unhealthy meal.

    Bottom Line

The risks of colonic cleansing outweigh the claimed benefits. If you feel the procedure might be right for you, first consult with your physician.
