• According to the University of Southern Mississippi, some of the most common symptoms of speech anxiety are butterflies in the stomach, clammy palms, and knocking knees. Roughly 70% of people have some form of speech anxiety. Speech anxiety is defined as feeling nervous, worried, or uneasy about speaking in public.


    Rochester Community and Technical College explains that people with speech anxiety will often exhibit various physical symptoms. Some of the most common physical symptoms include trembling, shaking, and sweating. Dry mouth and an increased heart rate are also symptoms of speech anxiety.

    Worrisome Thoughts

    One reason for speech anxiety is worrisome thoughts. People who have a fear of failure or believe that they will receive a negative evaluation from others often suffer from speech anxiety.


    A feeling of insecurity can also cause speech anxiety. If the individual has a perceived lack of skills or doesn't feel knowledgeable about their topic, anxiety can ensue.


    Fortunately, there are things that a person can do to control speech anxiety. Some tips include mentally preparation and taking deep breaths.


    Taking a public speaking class or joining a public speaking organization is also helpful in managing or eliminating speech anxiety. Organizations like Toastmasters are available to help people become better speakers and communicators.
