  • Sinus infections affect more than 35 million Americans of all ages. Children are susceptible to sinus infections because their bodies are still developing. Sinus infections are typically caused by allergies or the common cold. They can easily be identified in children and treated with the right knowledge.

    Look For Congestion

Look for sinus congestion. If you notice a runny or stuffy nose, keep an eye on your child. A sinus infection will cause the sinus cavity to swell and over-produce mucus leading to a runny nose, clogged nose or post nasal drip. Identify the source of the congestion to determine if it is the result of a sinus infection. The way to identify the source is to take note of the primary areas being affected. If there is congestion primarily in the nose, it is most likely related to the sinuses. See a doctor once you suspect a sinus infection in your child as he or she will need to take antibiotics. Review your child's medical history. If he has severe allergies, the congestion may be related to that. If he is used to humid climates and you've recently traveled, that may be the cause of the congestion.

    Observe Behavior

Observe your child's behavior to identify a sinus infection. Sinus infections make a person feel tired and lethargic. See if your child is sleepy, uninterested in playing or slow moving. Take your child's temperature as a sinus infection can lead to a fever. Keep in mind that sinus infections can cause sinus pressure that can lead to head, neck and tooth pain. If you child is complaining about headaches or toothaches, a sinus infection may be the reason behind the pain. Take note if your child becomes uninterested in things she typically enjoys doing.

    Know the Primary Signs

Ask your child to blow his nose to see what color the snot is. If the snot is clear and thin, he may just have a cold or allergic reaction to something. If it is a deep yellow and very thick, he most likely has a sinus infection. See if your child feels dizzy or nauseated as this is a common symptom if a sinus infection. Eye pain, ear pain and head pain along with nasal discharge are also common symptoms of a sinus infection.
