Maintenance is a word with a longer history than one might imagine. The Oxford English Dictionary dates its first use to around the year 1350, and current usage is found in the fields of law, medicine and everyday life.

Maintenance refers to the act of maintaining or keeping in existence or continuation. Additionally, it means to keep in appropriate condition and generally refers to a form of upkeep whereby someone or something is kept in functioning order through a series of actions.
Definition 2
Maintenance can also refer to the notion of keeping something maintained. In this regard, it refers to the continuation of a given state or relationship, such as the maintenance required for a romantic relationship. Colloquially, it is said that a girlfriend may be "high maintenance."

Maintenance may refer to the work required to adhere a quality of life, livelihood or subsistence. As an extension of this, it can also refer to such financial terms as child support.

In the field of law, the term can refer to the wrongful involvement in a suit by a party with no vested interest in the outcome. The meddler often assists one side or the other despite having no stake in either.

In biology, maintenance is the process of maintaining physiological stability, especially in regards to a stable body mass.
