    Strap a pair on him, and push him down a hill in the winter.

    I'd say the best way to teach a 5 year old would be to try a visual approach. Get them on a pair of skii's and show him/her how to do it while explaining. That way he/she can have hands on while you explain. I feel this would be the best way, and also get everyone out of the house for a bit. :)
