Use your diaphragm to push air out of your lungs, and to pull air in. It's not your abdomen, but the membrane between abdomen and lungs that does the best job of respiration.
My Mother sang beautifully. One exercise she did was
expel air from the chest, almost like a pant making a huh sound. Said also putting your hand on your chest to
be more aware of bringing the air from deep in the lungs until you get used to doing it. She died so I can't ask her more.
don't take this as offending-it really works and its what someone told me-heh...to take breaths while singing you use the same muscles as you do to fart...so try it it works...trust me(just try not to fart its sort of embarrassing).

You're reading When I sing I usually breathe to make my stomach go out but I get VERY little air. My voice coach said I was doing it wrong I should go through my chest more. It's MUCH easier but it goes against all advice to keep from moving shoulders. What's correct?
