Get a drum, gong, or other large noise making device that needs to be struck ... put it at one end of a long field ... have one demonstrator stand beside it with a very visible drumstick ... have them make very visible swings as they beat the drum once every three seconds ... have everyone else line up beside each other at the other end of the field, facing the drummer ... then slowly walk toward the drummer, and watch as the drummer continues to beat the drum once per 3 seconds ... they will observe that the sound of the drum does not match the sight of the drummer beating the drum ... and as the distance changes, so too changes the time difference between the sight and the sound ...

    The Chief

Watch a film showing the effects of an above ground nuclear detonation.

If you've got the space, divide some people up into two groups. Give each group a flashlight, a whistle, and a stopwatch.

Separate the two groups by a football field length or more. If you are in the country, try across a large field or down a long road. If you are in hills or mountains, separate them from one hilltop to another. The greater the distance, the better, as long as they can see each other and hear the whistle when blown.

Now, have one group stand by to start their stopwatch when they see the flashlight come on. Then stop it when they hear the whistle. Have the other group light their flashlight and blow their whistle at the same time.

Repeat, reversing the roles of the groups.

Or, like riseandconverge said, watch a thunderstorm!
