  • Being either is not a requirement to become a seal team member. It's quite possible his views have changed since leaving the seals. Those people are usually in for life. Which may explain why he is a "former" Navy seal. I can see where you may think that having liberal ideals would get in the way of carrying out your mission, but I doubt that question is anywhere to be found on any of their tests.
  • it does seem as though the majority of seals report being conservative, consistent with my beliefs of them. people do indeed change over time. maybe he never really was a seal. maybe he got out while the gettin' was good, although, given the rigorous training / selection procedures, i'd be surprised if he'd actually made it in. political beliefs are not manifestly a criterion of seal selection.
