ANSWERS: 1
  • Reason 1: Because the Book of Mormon is true. - Revised Reason 2: Because doing so would destroy all credibility the LDS church has as a church. Every Prophet and Apostle since the foundation of the church has testified of the truthfullness of the Book of Mormon, to say that it is not true is to say that those men were liars and thus invalidate everything else they may have said. Without the teachings of latter-day Prophets and Apostles there goes every unique Latter-day Saint teaching. It would destroy the church as we know it and force, if not an immediate certainly a complete restructuring of the church. Distancing ourselves from the Book of Mormon as a true book would destroy our claim of priesthood authority, we would also have to distance ourselves from the Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of Great Price (how could we claim that Joseph recieved these by the gift of God while at the same time concocting, distributing, endorsing, and promoting a book of false scripture?) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would be a completely differant church with a new origin and would do well to change it's name.
