Because US pro ice hockey teams think they have to fight all the time to make it interesting. You don't see that in the OHL and other Canadian A and pro teams. Look at the US player who severly crippled and injured a Calgary player for no reason other than to hurt someone.

i think everyone who answered this is waaay wrong. the reason ice hockey isnt extreamly popular is because you cant get anywhere near a the real experience on tv as when you are there. hockey is quite possibly THE MOST entertaining sport there is... i do not know a single person that has been to a live hockey game that didn't like it. it is just really lame on tv cause a lot of the action happens away from the puck and the tv camera is always following the puck. and the sounds and intensity cant be compared.

The Boston Bruins beat a Canadian team in the first NHL game played in the US. Sometime in the 20s.

I couldn't tell you. I absolutely love the sport and everyone I've taken to a game with me has become an instant fan.

Back when the popular sports in America were taking off it would have been impossible to keep ice rinks frozen. So right there your limited to northern states. Even they wouldn't be able to keep lakes frozen year round. Canada is cold as hell and has to deal with ice and snow all the time, so of course winter sports would be the main sports up there. The hassle in keeping a rink frozen still holds hockey back in America. Less rinks, means less good players, which means less fans. but if there was a fan base the rinks would be built but since there aren't fans they won't be. Not to mention the fact that lots of people who grow up in warm places don't want to play a sport where your on cold ice, why Northerners play more hockey than southerners. Whens last time you saw a Mexican on ice?

The reason: football, basketball and baseball. It's not the league's fault that a few other sports become more popular than ice hockey. It's more popular in Canada because of the perennially cold climate.

I don't believe it did. It has everything that American sports fans love - statistics and violence.
