Another good reason to trade your car in at a dealership or used car lot. Thank God she didn't go with him on the test drive. It is a shame there are so mamy wackos in this world. I have lived enough of life to know that I don't want to conduct a private sale of a vehicle.

she reported it stolen. Here, if you report your vehicle stolen you are not responsible for impound fees. If I was her I'd try to find out where the car was found, how, by whom, and in what condition. Then, I would file criminal charges and a lawsuit against the person who test drove it (because I would have his license photocopied) and recoup any costs through that avenue.

Was she trying to sell it? I can't think of another reason to allow a test drive.

One thing I'd suggest is getting to the police station to file charges as quickly as possible. Time is key in these cases. Also, go to the impound and take detailed pictures of the vehicle.

One question: Why did she HAVE to wait 24hrs? I can't see the reason for that.

    Hope this helps,
    Good luck

Thanks for the comments and help.
My daughter did call the police after four hours, they told her she had to wait the 24. This is an old beater car, she was selling it for $200, less than the impound fees.
She is filing charges. And yes, thank God she had the sence not to go with him.
I don't agree that she should just get the car and learn a lesson. She should follow through with filing the charges and letting a jerk know he can't push young people around. Or she might learn that the system protects the bad guy more than the good. Either way a lesson.
    Thanks everyone.

Pay the bill and be glad she got it back. The price is worth a lesson well learned.

Report this to the authorities and file charges against this person. I would pay the impound so that she has a car till the courts make there ruling but at lest you might have a chance in getting that money back.

I am sorry, the person you spoke to at the police department was wrong, a car can be reported stolen, the moment it is not returned when said. Maybe the law frowns on anyone giving permission for someone to drive it, that it does not belong to, and that changes the law on this, but I seriously doubt it! I would file charges on this man for theft despite the fact it was found! It is also in the records when you called the first time, so I would get a copy of that and see if the towing lot would work with you!
