Wifi sucks a lot of juice. It is possible that when you are running on battery power, the wifi adapter turns down the power on the transmitter in order to keep it from sucking your battery down quickly.
Since wifi requires two-way communication, connectivity is limited by the weaker transmitter, and yours is apparently pretty weak when running on battery power.
Of course, that is just an educated guess based on similar experience with other forms of electronics.
