I think this one is just practical.

If there is a ladder, there is likely someone on it, oding something which requires tools etc. which can be dropped...

Actually, I suspect a lot of superstions developed that way.
in old times you had to walk under the ladder to go to the gallows or get hung....therefore if you walk under a ladder you were definitely doomed

The superstition comes from the ladder leaning against the wall forms a triangle with the wall and the ground. The triangle is said to be the symbol of the Holy Trinity and if you walk through the triangle you are showing your disrespect for God and possibly sympathy with the Devil.
Alternatively, a ladder offers a means of ascent to Heaven for the recently deceased, in which case great care must be taken as to not offend or obstruct any spirits mounting it.
