How might a 23 year old be affected by an unforeseen separation of his parents that may lead to divorce? They're both confiding in him and he seems to be suppressing his stress from it. How can I help him or be there for him? I think he's hurting. (2009-

    People who complain to their kids and use them as counselors in divorce are selfish, immature and pathetic. In the extreme. I have a relative who does this with me...its horrifying.

    Tell the parents to leave him alone when it comes to complaining. Tell them to get themselves a counselor if that is what they need.

    Be a good listener. Tell him not to relay messages between parents. Take him out of the house (away from parents/stress) to do fun stuff.
