Rap focuses more upon the rhyming element whereas Hip Hop tends to incorporate more pop & a dance element such as Breakdance and various forms of street dance.

Hip-Hop is more than music, it's the culture of the revolution that began in New York City.

Often, some people say Hip-hop was the language of the Underground Railroad, which may be true. Others say hip-hop started with the Black Panther Party Movement of the late 60's and 70's.

Hip-hop is music, art, poetry, dancing, and life.

Rap music itself is just music, no culture behind it.

hip hop has many meanings it can tells about life, culture, and many other things
hip hop tells stories and is not about money and cars. Some great examples of hip hop are immortal technique, mos def, talib kwali, jurassic 5,exc.

rap is pop culture, like the stuff you see on tv ,that talks about cars and money

"Hip hop", at its core, is not a style of music. The term "hip hop" actually refers to the cultural movement that began in the 70s and 80s in the section of New York City known as The Bronx.

Hip hop culture found its expression in three major components; rap music, breakdancing, and graffiti art.

KRS-One is the mind behind Boogie Down Productions, one of the most influential rap groups to emerge from the hip-hop movement. He has an excellent spoken-word CD that explores hip-hop culture, and it is available at http://www.houseofnubian.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Product/asp/product-id/682385.html

Let's Get This Straight Rap Was What The Wider Media Called Hip-hop Because They Couldn't Conceptualise What The Culture Was About So Rap Is A Part Of Hip Hop Because Rapping (basic Lyricist)/mcing (advanced Lyricist) B-boying (breaking), Djing, Graffiti, And Beat Boxing Are The Key Elements That Make Up Hip-hop!.

Please remember that it's the mass media who likes to categories the elements of Rapping/Mcing into rap music.

There is nothing called rap music - rapping yes Mcing yes Hip-Hop music yes so if you want to define what you listen too it's Hip-Hop Music Rapping is the vocal part of the music.

No one says they like RNB or Classical singing music - they state I like RNB or Classical Music.

Just to reiterate that this debate actually makes no sense because rap an abbreviation of rapping is a part of Hip-Hop's 4/5 elements (rapping/Mcing, Djing, B-Boying, Graffing and Beat boxing/beat making).

Now If this debate wass about what the difference between a rapper and a mc then I would say Jay-z - great rapper Whilst Nas - great MC.

Hip hop, to me, incorporates more into the music than rap. More rhythm, more singing, more "soul," more...music, for lack of a better word. Hip hop isn't as mainstream as rap.

Rap, to me, is a spinoff from hip hop in that only one of the elements of the music is used (putting words to music).

Some rap artists can also do hip hop - Common is a great example of that.

Hip Hop is a culture created in cities to get kids off the street and give them meaning in their life. This culture consisted in different parts, Rapping (emceeing), DJ-ing, Beat-boxing, Graffiti and Breakdancing. Rap is a part of the HIp Hop culture.

These two terms are used interchangeably in pop culture and they are used wrong. However, Rap can be Hip Hop or Pop. Lil Wayne is a rapper but he is pop. Kendrick Lamar is a rapper but he is Hip Hop.

It's easy to tell how old the person is answering the question.
HIP HOP IS NOT A STYLE. Hip Hop IS the culture that embodies the 4 elements - Rapping, Turntablism, Breakdancing and graffiti.
If anyone tells you any different - 1. They are to young to know better. 2. They don't know squat about hip hop culture.
I don't care who the MC is, Common, Nas, Biggie, Young MC or MC frickin Hammer!! IT IS ALL RAP and they are all part of HIP HOP.
If someone said to me "I like rap but i'm not a fan of hip hop" I'd write them of as a complete idiot.

They are the same but the rap has more rhyming to it and it mixes into the music. Hip hop has more pop and dance element!
