Help answer this question below.
Hi, my first answer on here but here goes,The affections for the Krays goes right back to the beginnings of their "reign" whereby they had no time for criminals who acted out their crimes on ordinary working people, they would not tolerate crimes against women, and would look after their own very well indeed. When they were finally taken out of the picture the whole of the east end of London became vulnerable to criminals without scruples, even the police themselves had regrets as the Krays acted very much like a deterrent to the kind of low lives Londoners experience today.I know this as I lived the time.
Part of it may be due to the myth that they only hurt other criminals, so people think that they belong to a fairer class of criminal that no longer exists.
I had a neighbour who knew the Kray twins and said you honestly could not meet a nicer pair of guys. Their "work" was however quite violent and they had a reputation for aggressively getting whatever they wanted.
The affection thing stems from the fact that they would help an old lady across the road, were forever respectful of their elders but were feared by criminals - they were the last of a chain of criminal minds that kept the violence and bad stuff between themselves....allegedly!
Check out this site Jadey! ;-) quite an insight!

(smile) Maybe for the same reason the "Sopranos" were such a popular little family in the U.S. for so long, Jadey. And why the "Godfather" serial movies were such money-makers. There is a sort of love/hate relationship that many have with "the mobsters" and all the "anti-heroes" in the movies. Most would never want to deal with any of them in real life, though. (lol)

You're reading There is a level of sentimental affection for the Krays - even amongst some of the most law abiding. Why could this be?
