There is no cheap, safe way out of it. Either pay a little more or put your system at risk.

I still say pay a little more and go for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153023 . After the rebate, it's only $2 more and **MMUUCCHH** better.

I would wager that that 585W PSU you linked to only puts out ~350W at operating temperature. Many cheaper companies rate theirs at room temperature and only put out about 60% of their rating at normal operating temps while the expensive ones typically give the actual usable power. The numbers look less impressive, but they are rock solid. ALso the voltage is smoother; no spikes like a cheap PSU has.

The one you linked WILL fry and will likely take other stuff with it. And if you're still using an 8300 and can't pay more than $20 for a new PSU, chances are that you don't have the $$$ for a totally new system

Your link on the support page does no good to someone not registered with Dell as a customer or currently on their service with a non Dell 8300 box.
My answer previously still applies to this new question. You're stuck with getting the PSU from Dell if you want new or factory refurbed or you want to mod the case to accept ( not always possible) an off the shelf PSU.
Sorry..but that's a major pitfall regarding Dell that they don't tell you about when you buy one.
That link to the Hec PSU..had a look at it. If you're getting 500+ watts for under 20 bucks...you'll be replacing it pretty soon. Good ones in that range cost at least 50 bucks, better ones in the 80 dollar range. Awesome kick ass ones 120 and up. You do get what you pay for, that simple, no matter if you do mod your case to get it in there.

You could try PC Power & Cooling's website for a Dell compatible power supply. Those listed for your Dell model will physically fit without modifications. I bought one for a Dell Dimension 8250 and it fit perfectly. See them here: http://www.pcpower.com/index.html

how do you think i would have to mod my case? would i need a soldering device, or can i just use duck tape and hold it in place?
