- Good one. We have some beautiful ones here in Western PA. Amish carpenters also make great rockers and wooden chests for holding the beautiful quilts. Google Smicksbug PA. It has become as popular as Lancaster PA.

- I know the Amish have beautiful quilts and furniture. It is very beautiful. I bought an Amish historical quilt once, but I have misplaced it when I moved here. Hopefully I can find it soon. I have some stuff in storage still, so it is probably in a box. I hope it isn't ruined by now. Thanks for the link. It was interesting.

Every individual has their own impression of what 'is and what 'is not' - "art"/"folk art". Trade and Craft Shows, often have a great deal of hand made and home made items: blankets, shawls, leather crafts, pottery, ceramics. Original art work , be it on canvas, film, or sculpture is often more more appealing then mass produced, made in China,......

I view "Americana" and "Folk Art", symbols of what it means to be an American and live in great US of A. However, I am very sorry to say that I see all too often, a picturesque scene in nature (I love outdoor photography) - littered with soiled diapers and empty beer cans.

Go to any store you want to and look at the products. You will be very hard pressed to find "Made in the USA" on the label. Another sticker that seems to have become extinct is the "Made in America by Union Workers."

So, 'what is folk art of America'? Original, self made items of almost every description. Empty beer cans and dirty diapers, indicate to me that true appreciation of American Folk Art is dying out in our present lifetimes. Hoping it will get better in the years to come.

- Thanks for such a good answer, Fr. Joe. I was thinking perhaps Americans would do more folk art now that it takes so much money to live so there isn't much left for gift giving, especially with Christmas so close. I'd like to see more craft stores with people's art and not necessarily just places to buy supplies.
