When you go to the dentist and have N2O2 ..what chemically happens to make you feel that way?

    hanky

    you are thinking of nitrous oxide, NO2. basically the nitrogen breaks off from the oxygen pair and travels around and takes the place of other receptors and chemicals in the brain, it is still oxygenating fine. too much isnt good but the right amount can dull a humans sences.

    The general anesthetic nitrous oxide has chemical formula N2O. Not to be confused with nitric oxide (NO) or nitrogen dioxide (NO2) or other oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

    The short answer to your question is: Nobody knows.

    Despite the fact that it's used on millions of people every day, and is predictable and controllable with the right equipment, the exact mechanism is not understood.

    In recent years some of the anesthetics (especially injectable agents like propofol) have been explained by intereaction with receptors for GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid).

    The exact mechanism for inhalation agents like N20 are still not known -- despite many decades of research. The N2O molecules themselves remain chemically inert, i.e., the anesthetic effect does depend on metabolism or breakdown into other compounds. Most of it is excreted by the lungs unchanged when the gas is turned off.
