Question

Help answer this question below.

I called a roofer to get an estimate on some work. He asked me if I had the shingles. I never had a contractor ask me about materials before. How would I know what and how much to get anyway? Should I be leery of this guy?

It's quite possible that he's asking if you already have the materials or plan on getting them yourself, to save yourself some money. If he gets them, you'll be paying a bit more on his labor/transport costs but he may also be able to get a volume discount. You get them or plan to, and perhaps you get no discount but you save on his labor/transport charges. Get a quote for both. You may find yourself saving some cash if you purchase them after seeing how much they'll cost you.
Don't forget..he doesn't know you from Adam. He's got no clue if you're handy or not so how would you expect him to know if you knew what to get. He's probably assuming you did at least a little research.

    Research research research.

estimates are and should be free, just get the guy to run out and take a look at it. then call a few others, then look em up to see if they are insured, lic'd, and bonded. then scope out the BBB.

This person wants to give you his estimate for his salary only and does not include the shingles.

Mr. Roof just finished installing a new roof on my home and i could not be happier.

The estimator came out and was very friendly. he gave us the final cost, including shinles and put it in writing. he showed me Mr. Roofs insurance polycies and exactly how long the job would take.

He was so correct. workers arrived at 700 am and finished at 1230 pm. these people had their act together. three workers were next to each other taking off the old roof. the next line of three workers were laying down the roofing paper and they were followed by three workers installing the new roof. my neighbors could not believe it.

I HIGHLY recommend Mr. Roof. mrroof.com

You will be glad you made the call.

Maybe he was afraid of catching the shingles from you. They can actually hurt. The rash is itchy, too.
