Was Abraham Lincoln a "great" President, or was he simply responsible for more homicdes than any other U.S President?

    In his day, Lincoln was one of the most hated presidents in history. That is hard for people to believe nowadays. However, both the north and south blamed him for the war and the misery that most households suffered through. It is said that just about all the households in America were affected in one way or another by the Civil War, most losing one or more family members.
    The newspapers were brutal on the President and on occasion, some even called for his assassination. A great book on this subject is by Larry Tagg "The Unpopular Mr. Lincoln".
    So nowadays, why do we feel that Lincoln was the greatest President to ever run the country? Consider this. Lincoln was reviled before his assassination. John Wilkes Booth, his assassin, was revered (as an accomplished actor, handsome, refined, very popular...a true celebrity in his day). After the assassination on April 14, you can see that the roles suddenly reverse. Lincoln becomes the martyr of a Union that had just won the war and had their leader taken away from it. Booth on the other hand becomes the villian, reviled forever in time.
    Religion played into this role reversal as well but that is another topic for another day (Hint: Lincoln was assassinated on Good Friday of Easter).
