You can't base a belief system on some sort of hopeful insurance policy for the future, although a lot people seem to do just that. Without faith you cannot believe, so you would be a hypocrite to say that you did.
-
But there are thousands of Gods from many cultures throughout history, is it not an even safer bet to worship them all? What makes you so sure that the christian God is the one you should believe in?
-
This idea is called "Pascal's wager". Most thoughtful non-believers consider it to be a bad bet, because you're trading your commitment to the truth for a potentially false sense of confidence. A person of integrity values the truth more than that. It sort of insults the individual to suggest they should give up caring about the facts in order to (maybe) save themselves.
-
Believing in the lottery doesn't make one rich. Belief alone is empty. The safest thing to do is to act on your beliefs, whatever they may be. Ultimately your conscience is your guide - and your judge.
-
Human beings should not be TERRIFIED into believing in anything. +5
-
Just Which God would that be now??? lmao
-
This is one of the worst questions that religious people use to convince non believers.......can you not see the fallacy in it? Wouldn't an all powerful god know one was feigning belief?
-
Why believe in a set God, when our imagination gives us the freedom to create and believe anything we wish to? What if the safest choice for a person is a set of values which they themselves came up with? Sometimes believing in a religion in which one wrong move can send a person to a supposed horrible, terrible place to "pay" for something, is not the safest option for a given individual. They may fear that living in fear and judgment does not constitute as feeling "safe."

Baaaa!

I hope their is a G-d and I try to believe in him it or her. We have no proof. If G-d exist G-d would accept Human Kinds imperfections. I believe G-d would not care how we Worship or what religion we believe in. What is important to G-d is how we treat our follow Human Beings. G-d sees all our actions especially when we are not in a house of Worship.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. The christians will punish you here on earth for not believing and they will leave you alone if you tell them you believe. So believing to stay away from punishment after death is a much better reason for believing than anything the christians ever tell you about. The sincerity of your belief doesn't matter down here so it shouldn't matter to the invisible bearded man.
-
And if you spend your whole life supporting the argument of a possibly non-existent creature, you need to get outside more.
-
First of all, that wager only makes sense if you also believe in a hell. Not every religion claims their God created a hell. Secondly, you have to assume that the particula Deity you are going to follow can't tell (or doesn't care) that you are just going through the motions. Finally, you have to assume that you can choose to believe something. - Personally, I think recognizing that there is no reason to believe in an afterlife and simply living THIS life the best we can is the appropriate path.

If there is no God, you have wasted all the time and money you spent on worship and the church, and missed opportunities following rules that are not real. If there is a God, but not the one you believe in, you have done all this and potentially annoyed that God by worshiping another and obeying the wrong rules. If you don't know if there is any god, you don't know who that God is, nor what his/her/its rules ar.
-
It would be if everyone accepted your definition of what happens if you don't believe in God. No one knows whether or not your definition is true, so anyone could be correct.
-
Safe - Sure. Never going out, never interacting with anyone or anything is also safe, but I ain't doing it. I prefer to live a full life and one that is true to me, my values and my beliefs. Take the risk and love the liberation people.
-
Wouldn't God understand? After all we are only mortal creatures with a finite lifespan. If God is incapable of compassion and understanding, then does God deserve to be worshipped?
-
Well no. When I die, I'm going into the ground. And guess what? So are you. Hell doesn't exist. I why would I live a life I really didn't want to live just because it's safer? Booorring.
-
No, because anything that's ever been ascribed to God has been made up by people. There isn't a proof of heaven or hell and there isn't a proof of God and something tells me that even if God exists, he wouldn't take it so personally if someone didn't believe in his existence seeing as he hasn't done anything to show in an indisputable manner that he exists, thereby making it rationally impossible to continue to doubt or not believe in his existence (and i'm sure if he exists, he's aware of this)
-
I suppose it would be...but nobody can MAKE themselves believe, even if they wanted to
-
How freaking silly. That is denial. God is not going to be seen, felt or heard in any capacity with you crossing your fingers and hoping you are right. I think I'm going to pretend I am married and make a cardboard husband and talk at him all day long. That is what you propose. God is a reward for spiritual work on the earthly plane.
-
Pascal’s Wager- decides it’s better to believe in god just in case * but how do you know infinity is the reward!?
-
Not really, what if you believe in the wrong god.
-
No. risk, danger or safety all end with death, dude!
-
I suppose. I suppose so. But I'm just one of those "Doubting Thomas" types. God's gotta meet me halfway. She could do something to prove herself to me. She is all powerful after all, right?

Love for God is the main force that motivates God's true friends to worship Him. The Bible says: “This is what the love of God means, that we observe his commandments.” (1 John 5:3) Today, Jehovah is our God, the one who gave his Son as a ransom that we might have everlasting life. How reasonable it is that Jehovah expects us to love him in return! Our love is a responsive love; we are asked to love the God who loves us. Our love is for the One who “first loved us.”—1 John 4:19.

Sorry, a half-hearted belief in God "just in case He exists" to insure entry into Heaven "just in case Heaven exists" is never gonna cut it. You need to confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus is Lord and that He died for your sins in order to spend eternity with Jesus. Everyone makes their clear choice, you are either following Jesus or scattering for Him. Anyone who does not follow the Lord belongs to Satan.
