Travelling to Los Angeles, California. What streets or district near the Los Angeles Convention Center and The New Otani Hotel should a young and inexperienced tourist be wary of? Any thing else to know that would be useful for such a traveller?

There aren't a lot of walking streets near the Convention Center. You sort of get in and get out, usually by car or bus. But the New Otani is in Little Tokyo, which is great for walking around. There's a fantastic part of the Museum of Contempary Art there, a lot of Japanese shops and restaurants, a Japanese American museum, and it's not too far from Union Station and Olvera Street (though I wouldn't walk it, I'd take a bus or cab or the Metro if there's a station nearby). There are areas nearby that are not that safe to walk, but they're pretty obvious. In general, downtown, if the streets are lit and you see people walking around who don't look like street people, you're pretty safe. Most of the crime there occurs in areas that are thick with homeless people. There aren't a lot of civilian muggings.

The New Otani - which was just bought out recently so it's not New Otani anymore; it's Kyoto Grand....Is not too far from skid row, to the south. That area is to be avoided , esp at night.
