Question

Help answer this question below.

If you wasted huge amounts of time & effort paying attention and studying in school, is it OK to 'show off' your tenuous retention of useless facts & concepts later on in life? ;-)

Of course it is, as long as you don't use your vast amount of academic knowledge to bring down other people and belittle their intelligence.
I mean if you show off your knowledge but I learn nothing, then what's it worth, anyway?

Of course I know this doesn't apply to you; everytime I converse with you I always have to go look up words. :)

I certainly think so... and if like me you use it to win a round of drinks in a pub quiz week after week, and gain a completely false sense of intelligence from that, then that's all good too!

Well, this question assumes two things. One, that school and study are a waste of time and two, that the facts and concepts taught are useless.

If I believed that, I could look forward to a long and fairly meaningless life as an assistant manager at McDonald's.

I wouldn`t say any school or studying is a waste of time. As long as you are learning then it should be all good.

Saying that there appears to be more and more people staying in school, amassing degrees but not really gaining any real knowledge, and at the end of the day they shouldn`t even be there. I mean, I meet people with phd`s who can`t even tell me what galaxy we live in.

Lol. I studied so much and got so many academic accolades, yet I feel I have no need to "show off" my knowledge of what I've learned. I rather make friends and have a good conversation with Bob the garbageman than Wilfred the doctor, especially if Bob's a nice guy and Wilfred's a jerk. There are better things to talk about, that add spice to people's lives, like "What do you like to do in your spare time?" not "Did you know Hardy's The Return of the Native pits man against the elements of fate and nature?" Besides, I find the "common person" so much more interesting than the highly educated, stuffy academic. Lol.

    Millenium - The Mysterious M. . . GONE!

I've seen your answers before, philosopher, and I am VERY impressed with your knowledge! I, for one, value it and NEVER see it as useless! Knowledge IS "power"! You know that! But I realize, too, the question was a "tongue in cheek" one! I hear ya! But. . . .no! THIS lady rather APPRECIATES informed, educated, and savy people! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
