  • The motherboard doesn't dictate the capacity of the hard drive. It detects whether it's an IDE or SATA drive. The capacity of the drive itself can be 64GB or 1TB.
  • The challenge is the number of bits available to address the drive. If you simply can no longer find a hard drive small enough to match an older motherboard, some hard drives have jumper options to make them appear smaller than they actually are. If you want to use a larger hard drive and actually get the capacity, your best bet is to add a separate controller card and reserve the controller on the motherboard for CD/DVD.
