    That having the belief produces beneficial results. It is not necessary for it to be true. For example, if the members of a sports team erroneously believe they have a good chance of winning a game they may try harder instead of giving up. Believing your wife is the most beautiful woman in the world can help your marriage last.
    On lesser things the belief usually has to be true to be of value.
