    Yes!

I think it is down right disgusting, and every time I find a food with carmine (aka cochineal extract) as an ingredient in it, I write or email the company and tell them that I do not want bug juice in my food. I have done this several times. One of my letters actually contributed to Yoplait yogurt changing there formulation to use vegetable coloring instead of carmine.

Being a vegetarian, I am very aware, and yes it is gross. I actually find it is not used very often, red #40 being more common.
It takes thousands of the tiny beetles to make just a small amount of coloring. I read that other coloring such as red # 40 is cheaper, but bugs are a big and traditional business. I find many things omnivores do and eat to be disgusting. I don't at all understand why it would bother someone who eats blood, blood vessels, fat, muscle, a bit of fecal matter, etc.

I'm also grossed out that they use human hair and or feathers to make many breads (L-Cysteine).

It doesn't really bother me at all. Many of us have probably eaten things that are ALOT worse without even knowing it.

Not at all. Insects are a brilliant source of protein.

the mashed up bugs are used to make the red food coloring. honestly it's not as gross as eating meat that you have no idea what part of the animal it came from.

Of course. But, on the other hand it tastes pretty damn good.
So it's pretty much taste vs. how horribly gross and inhumane it is.

That's what gives it that unique flavor. Have you ever picked and eaten a fresh strawberry?. There's no comparison.

Not to a person who is not a vegetarian. We are used to eating all kinds of protein rich foods.
