35mm is best for now. You just can't beat film. But digital is racing to catch up and pass film. And the downside of 35mm is that you can't see your pics instantly to decide if you got a good one. And you can't delete the ones you don't like.
Our Sony Digital is fantastic. the photos it takes are unbelievable. its just like HD. 6 pixels.
35 mm film in high grain is likely a few mega pixels per sq. mm. but unless you want EXTREME enlargement that is kinda moot. HD CamCorder with software that uses multi frame Analysis "might' do better than film. But for one frame ... film.
Choose digital if u like to click away a lot of photos. it gives u higher number of photo since u store it on a memory card.
I recommend digital over 35mm.

Get a digital SLR camera, with as high a resolution (megapixles) as you can afford. Film is going away. Many film manufactures are not making film anymore. It will become harder and harder to get your film processed. The quality of digital is getting much better than when it originally came out with. Start at a camera with at least 10 megapixles....
It depends on your final application of the photo. If you want to be able to ues it on a computer, email or website then digital is best since it doesn't need to be scanned in and should already have more than enough resolution.
