Elvis was unique. He was overshadowed by he Beatles, but still retained his title as the "King." All of us who live for rock music have been waiting for the next Elvis, but I am beginning to wonder if anyone will come along to fill his shoes. Today's music seems to be going in the wrong direction - it's getting much worse instead of better. If the trend continues, music will die completely and everyone will be listening to noise mixes. It will be centuries before music is rediscovered, and then, at that time, it might be awesome!
He may have done other artist's songs, thats what everyone did in the 50's. He brought alot of artist's to everyones attention, which gave them a career. What he did in 54, 55 and 56 was considered so outrageous and vulgar, very tame by today's standards. If you put things in perspective, he is the king. Times change, so if you weren't there, you probably don't get it. Like the Beatles and Sinatra and Bing Crosby, a product of the times.
This will never happen. his music and movies had too much effect on a lot of people.
Even great grandchildren and grandchildren love Elvis and they did not even know of him, except through their parents.
Legends are impossible to destroy.
I never really considered him the real king of rock. most of the songs he sang that were very popular were remakes of old black blues songs (such as Hound dog)I just look at some of the pioneers like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and believe it or not the Isley Brothers (they had hits like "Shout" and Twist and Shout) Twist and Shout was remade by the Beatles and was a hit for them
I have never been a fan, though he did have a good voice and stage presence. I don't know who'd replace him. James Brown, perhaps? Or is James Brown the Daddy of Soul? (lol)
I like Freddie Mercury as a rock singer more than Elvis. I think Mercury had a better voice all around.
No.

You're reading Do you think it's time someone dethroned Elvis Presley as the King of Rock N Roll? He mostly just sang Country and Gospel anyway.

I think there is a lot of good music out there. A lot of bad music too but that's the way it's always been. Every generation only really has a handful of great bands to choose from.
Elvis was a great performer but I don't respect him as much because, as far as I know, he didn't write his own stuff. He was a great entertainer and that's pretty much it. Also, I just don't like the title and I would bet he didn't either. Most of his career is comprised of Country and Gospel songs and bad movies.

To really understand the appeal of Elvis, you would have to have been living during that time. Looking back, he looks almost foolish when compared to all that's come since, but at that time he was a one of a kind, the likes of which nobody had seen before, and when he hit the market, it was with a big bang. It was the whole "package" that did it for him. Musically, he was a lot like Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins. His acting wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. People just went to his movies to look at him and study him because you couldn't "see" him when you listened to his records.

Part 2 (continued)..
I think that people have changed so much since the early 1950's that it would be difficult for any new artist to break out with that kind of appeal as Elvis had. People these days just aren't that impressed with much. Prince and Michael Jackson probably came the closest of anything since, but they just were'nt unique enough to have the same "Elvis" appeal.
