I start by giving all humans that I meet a minimum of respect just for being human, then give more respect or take away respect based on their behaviours that I witness after we have met. If they earn more respect, I gladly give it, if they earn scorn, distrust, or even hatred, then I give that instead of respect since that is what they earn & deserve.
