Like one of the other answers here, I can recommend Open Office, and can personally vouch for Filehippo.com.
Another one to look for is Defraggler, espescially if you're using an older PC, it's much better than the MS version that comes with Windows XP/2000, I used to use it to keep the outdated computers at work from dying!!
I also recommend Open Office, however, you may qualify for the Office Home and Student edition:

Legally, your only options are to pay hundreds of dollars or use another product.
Like a few others here, I also recommend OpenOffice.
