They are generally called "games", not "matches", in Canada.
They are relatively common. It is tradition.

I went to a fight one time and a hockey game broke out.
I see most fights involving USA teams because they think this is what the fans want and most times this is true.
I have seen very few fights involving Canadian teams and those in the OHL very rarely.
The USA people think violence is good just like soccer teams and fans in europe.
About 80% of the match is fighting.
There are very common in the game of hockey. It revs up not only the team but the fans. Without fighting, hockey wouldn't be nearly as exciting as it is.
