The punt is a way of turning over the ball farther away from the opponent's goal, or creating an opportunity to make them fumble.
The punt is almost always done on 4th down, usually with more than a yard to go to get a 1st down.

When a team is on a 4th down and decides to punt the ball to the opponent team instead of going for another 1st down.

And the punt is necessary because if a team doesn't get the necessary yards for a 1st down, they turn the ball over to the other team at that spot; so instead of taking that chance most of the time they punt it away to the other end of the field.
