Bile is the usual cause (from the gall bladder). What we eat can have an impact. Iron supplements and leafy greens can be the cause and in most cases is the cause.
Other potential causes:
Bacterial infection
Celiac disease (gluten intolerance)
Eating disorder(s) such as binge eating and abusing laxatives
Giardia
Intestinal cancer
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Pseudomembranous colitis
Salmonella or E. coli (food poisoning)
Viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu)

I have noticed that eating foods or drinking drinks with a lot of purple food coloring (e.g. grape soda) will do that to me.

it's actually not that uncommon ... bile, from the gallbladder, is extremely green when it enters your digestive system, and gradually turns brown ... an excess of bile, or a more rapid than usual transit time through the intestines, won't allow the bile enough time for that color change to happen ... if its a one-time thing, don't worry about it ... but if it persists, you should see a doc
