Somebody ought to give you a straight answer.

"Glossolalia" or speaking in tongues is the vocalizing of fluent speech-like syllables, often as part of religious practice. Some consider these utterances to be meaningless, others consider them to be a holy language. So far, I don't think anyone has claimed to understand the "language."

From what I understood from reading the Bible it was the ability of the apostles to communicate with the occupants of foreign countries. From what I saw on the one occasion I went to a church where it seemed to be part of their ritual it is speaking gibberish.

Since I have been in a pentecostal church, I'll give you that view and try to keep it short. This is a very in-depth kind of question. It is considered a gift of the Holy Spirit, not given to everyone, but manifested in those who have "received the Holy Spirit." Don't ask me how *that* happens, after 20+ years I still don't get it.
In the book of Acts (2:4) "Luke uses a different adjective when he says, “they began to speak with other tongues.” The word “other” (Gr. heteros) simply means that they spoke in languages different from the normal language they were used to."
The modern Christian tongues movement is nonsense in the fact that they are *not* speaking and understanding a language that already exists (like they did in Acts), in fact, most Christian tongues that I've heard go along the lines of, "sha bla bla, habla ba ba," etc. Some people are very loud about it, some people whisper and some don't say anything at all.
I've heard preachers say things about how that nonsense is communicating through the Holy Spirit about things that cannot be articulated through any language, but I've not seen any biblical example of this.

Supposedly the meaningless gibberish that comes out of their mouths is a message from god, god speaking through them etc. The thing is, when someone speaks in tongues, someone is supposed to be able to understand and interpret that to the masses. I have yet to have seen or heard of anyone doing so. +5

Its basically people freestyling with sounds. People claim it is a sign of the holy spirit which is entirely in their imaginations. Doing it is actually good for you in a way, so long as you realize that it is your own ability, not that of some creature created by your imagination.
