Maybe they think you committed some big crime and changed your name to avoid arrest. I would probably be curious as to why but I don't know of very many people who would pay to have their name changed just to be doing it. There is always a valid reason for it. It costs a good bit of money to do that. I know someone who changed her name so her abusive ex couldn't track her down and kill her. People change names all the time and so to me it's no big deal.

Since you're still there and admit it, and you're so open, I would be curious why and hope you would feel free to tell me if we were close.
    .
Acquaintances, I don't care, and my mind doesn't go to criminal activities. Criminals do a lot more than change names, unless they are very, very dumb. I never liked my first name because it was odd and felt more masculine.
    .
My parents were all upset that I used a nickname. But my Dad doesn't even like his own name and has never used it - using a derivation of his last name. They just liked it for me.
    .
I think that there should be certain ages we could just pick names we liked and used them. But you can't in a dictatorship/paranoid society.

Maybe they're afraid that you changed your name to try to erase a crime you committed in the past. You know, if you have a different name, maybe people won't know you're the same person that committed the crime. The other possibility is that you had a crappy name and couldn't live with it anymore. What was your reason?

Usually people change their names for two reasons - if they don't like their original names OR if they hide from someone like police, mafia, crazy ex, etc. (police protection program for example).
So when I learn someone changed their name my curiosity immediately wants to know what's the story behind that. Maybe if you tell them why you changed your name they will stop look at you strangely - when people don't know the truth they usually have theories about it, theories that can be TOTALLY wrong (they could think you are serial killer) ;)
