Good answer. Carbon is produced in very large quantities by stars, and, as you say is present in large quantities here on Earth. Each carbon atom has four bonds that can hook up to other elements in nearly endless ways, so it provides an excellent, readily available, building block to form complex molecules with all sorts of useful properties.
