Interesting question. +5. While investment banking is parasitic, I would disagree about geek jobs. They serve the information economy.
If something great is invented, it's built in China for a fraction of the cost of building it here. So we get virtually nothing out of it.
Are you implying that google doesn't innovate?
Every week I find myself saying of a new software product of theirs "Wow...what a great idea. How did they get time to dream this one up when they just put out a new one last week!"
How is working for Google parasitic compared with making dishwashers?
Our best and brightest didn't get exported like the jobs they would've filled if businesses hadn't been rewarded for exporting all of our jobs overseas.
Do we not have more and better products thanks to investment banking and 'geeks'? Vehicles continue to increase in terms of gas mileage as technology improves, processing power for computers, increased automation that leads to increased production capability, dishwashers that clean faster, better, and use less water, the improvements that happen just daily are astounding. Innovation happens every day thanks to the marvels of technology that would not exist without 'computer geek' jobs and that innovation would not ever make it to market without 'parasitic' investors to see such innovations and feel it worthy of investing the capital to make the idea a reality.
I bet you think this is a real clever question. Get a life.

You're reading If our best and brightest weren't drawn to parasitic jobs like investment banking or computer geek jobs like google and microsoft, would the U.S. have a more dynamic economy with better products? For example a dishwasher that cleans in 45 seconds
