Question

Help answer this question below.

After all this time by now we should have progressed more than we have..we human beings. Are we regressing? Were we "better" centuries ago than we are today? Whatever the problems then, was there less evil and more goodness than today?

No, hon. We are as good or better than we have ever been in the past, though it is hard for many to believe. I am a student of history...and I know. We are much better than our past.

Let's see. Alexander the Great's massive murder. All the killing needed to build the Roman Empire. Attila the Hun's slaughter. The Dark Ages. The Crusades. The Holocaust. Nope, can't say as we're a whole lot worse today than in the wonderful times gone by. :)

I believe that we are as a species digressing in the morality category...i think that honesty and integrity come from hard work and because we hardly do anything real for ourselves we have forgotten how to trust and what it feels like to REALLY EARN our livleyhoods

I think it's impossible to categorize societies as either "good" or "bad", and "moral" or "immoral" or whatever other adjectives you choose to use. Morality is entirely subjective, and our idea of what is right or wrong changes with time, just like technology, fashion, language, and all other parts of human civilization. From the standpoint of nature, we weren't any better hundreds of years ago than we are today; nature doesn't judge us, only we can judge ourselves.

If you asked a fundamentalist Christian who was better, the puritans or modern Americans, most would answer that the puritans were more pious and moral. But if you asked a modern, progressive liberal-minded American, they would say that we are better off today than we were 200 years ago. It all depends on who you ask.
