i think it would defeat the purpose of the film, a journey which develops friendship, love and bravery. And if they did use the eagles we would never get to know the characters, and what is happening to middle earth.
Because the eagles are scared of the raging fires and a huge fiery eye staring and wraiths dressed in black and the big fiery eye cursing and there would be horrible blood shed.
