Help answer this question below.
I have both Dell and HP notebooks. I'm happy with both of them. Yes, HP does get a little hot, but only when I leave it on my bed. (So the fan is blocked) If it's sitting on a table top, it's fine. The HP is the one I use on an every day basis. I like it because it's so small and I can bring it with me very easily. The battery lasts a long time (though never as long as they claim it does) and the keyboard is comfortable. Of course, being me, I load it up with as much memory and hard drive space as I can afford.
I haven't had any problems with tech support for the HP. I popped a key off it accidentally and they had it fixed and back to me in three days. Dell also has very good tech support. And if you buy the extended warranty through Dell you're all set. I know because I've had Dell for years and have used their tech support quite often. They've always solved my problems. Always buy the extended warranty from the company that made the computer..don't try getting any other warranties like Best Buy. And good luck!
Dell is very good. But if you want to choose one from the list you gave, get a HP.

I am no expert in laptops, but bought a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC (dv5) a few months ago and have been very happy with it. I went from a dial-up dinosaur that my computer savy brother-in-law put together for me so am easily wowed by my new toy, but it performs well and has had no problems yet. I researched reviews when making my choice because the technical stuff means nothing to me, and HP was consistently given high ratings. I have heard some negative things about Dell, but don't know what the various complaints were about specifically.
It depends on what you want out of a computer. Dell is a very good brand, you can build it the way you want it on their website, and they are reasonable compared to others (price wise). I have a Dell XPS, the key board is waring out but other then that it's a great computer.
Dell latitude or precision.
Grab the extended 2 or 3 year warranty THROUGH DELL (NOT bestbuy or any retailer). You'll be glad you did if anything goes wrong as Dell's support is pretty quick and helpful as well. The hardware in their professional line of laptops are all high-quality and modular as well, unlike other brands.
my laptop of choice would be a Dell XPS.
I have had very good experiences with Acer laptops. with all the chaos in my house, 5 kids and a dog, the laptops lasted at least 2-3 years each. Actually quite an accomplishment considering the drops, bumps and spills they endured.
