I think not saying goodbye would make it much more difficult to deal with the loss in the long run. Sooner or later you have to acknowledge they are gone and by that time you may not be able to find closure like you could if you dealt with it at the time of death.
When my grandmother died a year and a half ago, i refused to say goodbye, and pretended she was still here for a good two months. I new she was gone, i just didn't want to believe it.
