Not sure about wearing one but I think the name is quite strange. I'm from Australia and we call them bum bags becauase of the way they sit around your bum!
In Australia fanny is a slang worn for your...well lets call it your front bum!!

If you are a runner I recommend it, I use one to hold gel packs and stuff, they are great. But not for everyday use:)

Lol I dont know but I had one when I was a kid in the early 90s it was bright yellow nylon. They do look kinda goofy but are functional at the same time.
