  • A simple, old fashioned home remedy that has always worked quite well for me is a little bit of baking soda in cool water. The soda neutralizes the acid in moments, I burp a couple of times and it's over. That being said, if you have recurring heartburn you might discuss it with your doctor. An effective over-the-counter solution for me is the "Equate" brand of "acid reducer" available at Walmart, which I sometimes take before going to bed to prevent acid reflux at night.
  • Baking soda works as well or better than any over-the-counter remedy at a small fraction of the cost. Beer & coffee are two of the worst culprits for heartburn. Because of my fondness for both, I was chewing larger numbers of antacids as the years went by. Then I came across a book called "Why Stomach Acid is Good for You." Most of the book is devoted to the author's case that heartburn is the result of a lack of stomach acid, not too much. Antacids are actually harmful because they neutralize all of the needed stomach acid, causing an acid deficit. The author suggests a test to see if you have an acid deficit: While suffering an attack of heartburn, swallow a tablespoonful of fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar. I tried lemon juice, and the heartburn quickly disappeared. Since lemon juice worked so well, I started squeezing lemon juice into my daily drinking water, which added a pleasant lemon flavoring. Since then, my heartburn has diminished considerably. I threw away the antacids. Also following the book's advice, I put paving bricks under the headward bedposts to slant the bed a bit, which keeps digestive juices from flowing down the esophagus as you sleep. Strangely, I noticed that eating sushi killed my heartburn. I suspect it's the wasabi, even though you would think wasabi would be heartburn fuel.
  • Did you lose some weight when u had lemon juice and water?
