The so-called "romance languages"--sometimes referred to as "latin languages", the
language of ancient Rome--began as dialects of "Vulgar Latin" of Indo-Europe, and
they are, primarily, a group of 5 which are the more widely known and spoken: Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Also there's Catalan (only spoken in certain part of Spain) and Occitan, but they aren't widely spoken or known. As to why they're sometimes referred to as "rapid fire" I'm not sure. But perhaps is because its diologues are fast-flowing--smooth but rapid.
