It's like thinly disguised porn for young girls.
They are going through puberty and dealing with emotions and feelings they don't understand (probably thanks to our abysmal sex education programs) and they see this sleek "sexy" vampire in the films who sweeps little waifish codependent Bella off her feet and promises to take care of her and make a good little housewife out of her... and it excites them and satisfies a certain part of their psyche.
I'm pretty sure that Twilight has set feminists back about 100 years...

It's because they got good looking actors to play the main roles (which they kinda had to do as it's part of the characters). Loads of these crazy little Twilight fans have not picked up the book and probably never will, and yet they act as though they love the story. It's rubbish, they just fancy Edward and Jacob.
The movie is even more geared towards teenage girls than the book (although it also has a tendency to gush about how freaking pretty Edward is from time to time... it's dull). It's mostly full of Bella swooning and close ups of Edward.
They are really not very good actors either. Kristen Stewart is so wooden it's ridiculous. It's just because they're pretty.
Lots of them are just jumping on the bandwagon as well.

I don't know, I think it has to do with the sudden vampire kids trend and the fact that twilight didn't make vampires look like blood thirsty monsters.
I personally couldn't stand the movie at all, I was laughing through out the whole thing, especially the one part where he's like "we can't be seen in light, we change" I was expecting this huge intimidating transformation, but all he did was glisten, like he had a fight in art class with a bunch of glitter. OH man that caught me off guard and I laughed soo hard water came out of my nose

It's because almost all girls would like a guy who is so devoted with them that they'd die for them. Like how Edward loves Bella.
