If the service is very poor than I give a tiny tip to reflect the tiny service.
When the service is great than I always leave them smiling.
There is a basic level of what is an acceptable tip for acceptable service, and that's what a server should get if they did their job. If they did a shitty job, then no tip. If they somehow went the extra mile and made my experience better then average, they will get more.
Generally speaking though, it doesn't make sense for someone to get extra money for just doing their fucking job.
EDIT: The Reservoir Dogs scene makes my point quite clear.
Absolutely. That is the proper etiquette. If you don't want to tip, eat at home where someone else's livelihood isn't dependent on you following polite society's well-established rules.
Should one encounter poor service, one still tips 10-15%, and discusses the situation with the manager on the way out.
Again, no one is "forcing" you to do anything. But I would suggest you never revisit a place where you have been so cheap as to not leave a tip.
I never tip, but after reading a lot of these things, I think I should start. I can see why someone wouldn't tip someone for poor service, but at the same time, what if the person just had a bad day? Maybe your tip could just be the thing that cheers this person up!
