Help answer this question below.
You need to go with a 64 bit system for anything over 4 Gigs of RAM. Look for 'DDR3' memory which is faster than 'DDR2'. DDR2 & DDR3 RAM comes in different speeds, too, such as PC3-6400, PC3-8500...the higher the number, the faster that the memory operates.
You can get multi-core processors (CPU's)...the more cores the better and the processors come in different speeds, too. The motherboard has to support the type of memory and processor that you choose. Check the 'front-side bus' speed of the motherboard...it may be 1000 MHz or 2000 MHz or more. The processor speed is multiplied by the front-side bus speed to make the actual speed of the computer. (There is also something called the 'system multiplier' setting in the BIOS software....you can put it on the highest setting after you start the computer.)
Another thing that will speed up a computer is a solid-state (flash) hard drive...they have much faster read-write times and they have gotten much cheaper in the last year.
That is way too many rams. You will stop seeing benefit after about 4 GB.
Ram doesn't necessarily make it fast. If you want a super fast computer, you should look at things like processor cores/Ghz, graphics card, and HDD read/write speed. 16gb ram will just make you able to do super multitasking.
First of all, RAM by itself doesn't make it fast. I have 6GBS, thats plenty for me. Like jacobjordan said, you also want a good Proceeor, GPU, HDD, and other things.
I have a very very nice (gaming) computer, and here are my specs, if you're interested:
AMD Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition processor @ 3.2 GHz
ASUS M4A78+ Motherboard
4 500 GB Hard Drives running at RAID 0
BFG Tech GTX 285 OC2 (1 GB RAM, 256 MB Memory Interface)
Antec EA650 (650 WATTS, DC output of +5V=Max Amp of 25)
One 120mm coolermaster green LED light fan, and two blue LED Light 80mm Apevia Internationals.
6GBs of Random Access Memory (RAM) Patriot DDR2 (1066 MHz)
