How can I build a 16gb ram computer which means it's super duper fast?

• Are you sure? I mean, even todays computer games qualify as "simulations". You are aware of the physics engines they use nowadays, right? We've come a LLLOOONNNGGG way since the Atari 2600 here. Not all of the work is done by the graphics card; the CPU and system memory do a bit too.
   
  Also, you automatically assume Windows. Chances are that if they really want speed, they will ditch that slow-ass bloatware and use the same OS that many supercomputers do; Linux. And almost by definition, Linux blows your last comment into the dustbin of irrelevance with it's multiple terminals and all.
   
  Of course, we lack the information, like what it's intended use is and all. We can speculate until the Sun burns out and it *might* turn out that we are both wrong here.

• I know 16GB of RAM would be overkill for *my* needs (I do just fine on 2GB) but it would only be marginally acceptable for my graphics designer buddy unless he put the swap partition on an SSD.
  Without knowing what this person intends to do, I am not going to judge how much RAM he *really* needs. I'm just going to answer the question.

• For the *average* home computer user, you are entirely correct, JS, and that is why I am satisfied with my 2GB box.
  However, many of my friends are not average. How many average PC users break the 4GHz mark? Is 1TB of storage adequate?
  I know people who take work home with them, and you would be surprised how resource-hungry CAD can be. As for my GD friend, when it takes a few hours to render a single frame, maybe you're working with files that could benefit from being stored in RAM.
   
  The last time I made an assumption about what someone intended, a fire extinguisher was involved so I'm a bit cautious, especially with so many undefined parameters to the question.

  I also agree that the original questioner probably does not need 16 gig of ram, however, the generic point by Jerv still applies.
  
  And, yeah, a lot of physics simulations use a huge amount of RAM. I know about this because my friend worked on and developed the field for the institute who are using this machine, on simulations he helped develop.

• Haha, ok. I'll try to make do with my measly 4 gb of ram. Life can certainly be a struggle sometimes, but I'm doing my best with what little I have. My point still applies, and I have had much success with it.

• poor example, as you can go from requiring 16 gig of ram to not quite freely depending on your useage. You can't do the same with a heart transplant.

• I can take a few guesses. Here is one;
  My experience is that many people can only comprehend the type of stuff they see every day. Some people go so far as to assume that anything they have not personally seen/experienced is either stupid or impossible.
  However, since my life is sometimes stranger than fiction, I have seen many things that would blow their minds. And out of all of that weirdness, nine times out of ten there is a method to the madness.
  I can easily accept that some people may need 16GB of RAM especially since I've seen people that actually need it (or more) because I have seen people doing some pretty heavy duty stuff when they take work home with them. Just because *MOST* people only use their PC for browsing, spreadsheets, and/or gaming, that doesn't mean that *ALL* computer users are like that.
  BTW, how many people do you know that have (and need) full-on workstations? I am not one of them, but I know a few.

• I never said it was impossible. It is not required to have 16 gigs to have a fast computer. lol geeze. don't have a stroke. I still feel like you guys are behaving pretty asinine. You even know I'm right, you yourselves use a normal amount of ram to have a fast computer. I guess you need to take some aggression out somewhere. Wives can only take so much.

• Something like Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme or the new Intel Core i7. Look them up. They don't come cheap though.
